You totally can turn the light off, despite what everybody says on here. Just press the big button with the light on it!

I was worried my 64 year old mother would throw this at my head as an 'old lady present' but she was thrilled as she often gets up at 4am for a cup of tea before returning to bed. Works great and got me brownie points despite being a useless daughter generally. Hurrah.

Replaced the kettle with this for mum and dad. Less chance of an accident. We don't use the alarm function just the second button from left, The teapot needs to be set correctly in the right of the unit (it touches a button) you can check it is setup ready by seeing if the button turns blue, then quickly pressing again before it activates.
